DEB'S CORNER

I grew garlic in my garden this year. I took a bulb, broke it into pieces and planted. Now it's growing! Did you know that the flower/seed stalks that shoot up are edible? Most people cut them so the bulbs will grow bigger and better. DON'T THROW THEM AWAY! They are actually called garlic scapes and are delicious! You can brush them with olive oil and grill them like asparagus. You can chop them up and add them to salads and stir fry. Or you can make pesto. It will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks, or you can freeze it to use in the winter. Use it on brushetta, pasta, eggs, focaccia, and anything you grill. Mix it with mayonnaise and put it on a roast beef sandwich.

Garlic scape pesto

1 pound garlic scapes
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
Olive oil (about 1/2 to 1 cup)
Pine nuts if available

Chop the garlic scapes into 3 inch lengths. Put it in the food processor and process until pureed. Add the parmesan and pine nuts and process until smooth. Slowly add the olive oil as the food processor runs and continue until all the oil is combined into the garlic. Store in an air-tight jar in the refrigerator.

We’d like to hear your garden stories. What have you planted this year that you’ve never planted before? What’s your favorite vegetable to grow? Are you using a garden to save money?

The picture is garlic in my garden - looks kinda like wild grass shoots - its bigger now after all that rain!

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE

Saturday, June 27 has been declared the National Day of Health Care Service. There is a need in Franklin County to share time with lonely shut-ins and nursing home residents, as well as provide respite care for those caring for their sick loved ones at home. Supporters in our community are coming together to show our elected representatives that we are ready for a change in our health care system.

We are starting by doing something real here in our own county. Area residents are encouraged to visit the Hampton nursing homes on Saturday, June 27. The Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility and the Hampton Health Care Center have activity directors and social workers who will know who likes visits, to be read to, to go for a walk, help with a computer, to play with wii, to make a craft, enjoys a vaccinated pet, or to go to coffee and cookies in the afternoon. Best times to visit are mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and early evening.

You may call Julie Stewart Ziesman at 641-751-6014 to find out how you can volunteer your time. We are all called to serve others. It will take all of us to spend just an hour a month to improve the lives of those who need us.

Remember Darren?

Darren graduated in 1979 from Ackley Geneva and is an Iowa boy through and through. Darren recently was featured in the June issue of Throttler Magazine for the extreme bagger he built.

You may know the name—his brother Danne owns the Hansell Ag and Repair shop in Hansell.

Darren built his bike starting in December 2007 with just an idea of what he wanted it to look like. It was completed August 6, 2008 and he’s racked up 7,000 miles on it since then. It’s made from steel, not fiberglass and rides like a dream.

4-H STYLE SHOW

4-H Youth enrolled in the Clothing Project have an opportunity to model their constructed garment, and learn more about personal hygiene and accessories at the upcoming Fashion Revue event. Judging will be based on grooming, posture, poise, accessories, and total appearance.

4-H members not enrolled in the Clothing project may participate in Clothing Selection. Youth will follow a similar program but will model a purchased garment. Judging will be based on the individual, the outfit on the individual, the outfit for the intended purpose, and the money spent.

A new class called the “$15 Challenge” is open to any 4-H member. An entrant does not have to be enrolled in the clothing project. Youth are to purchase an outfit that represents the 4-H’ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. Member should plan to talk about experiences in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality and construction features, price and cost comparison. Outfits may be selected and/or purchased from a garage sale, consignment store, or resale shop (i.e. Goodwill, Salvation Army). Cost of outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories, or undergarments. Receipt(s) MUST be turned in with Clothing Event Report Form.

Fashion Revue/Clothing Selection/$15 Challenge will be held Thursday morning, July 9 at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Members must have pre-entered by June 24 at the Fair Office, and bring the appropriate forms with them July 9.

Participants of Fashion Revue, Clothing Selection and $15 Challenge will model their outfits at the 4-H Style Show, Sunday, July 19, at the Franklin County Fair following the church service.

JUNK IT IN JUNE SMASHING SUCCESS!

The cutest shopper was this little guy all decked out in a seersucker suit and happily riding in his stroller.

If you didn’t have a seat in the shade, you were pretty hot indeed. There were three ladies who took advantage of the bench in front of Cornerstone Cottage.

Mainstreet square was filled with all kinds of booths. Watkins, Silpada Jewelry, Avon, Lions Club, Farmers Market, yard sales, Historical Society antique sales, Melaleuca, Discovery Toys, Main Street, Scentsy, Youth Bake Sale, Tastefully Simple, even Franklin County News Today!

The ladies were raising funds for Harriman Nielsen House and had some incredible bargains for sale! Their hats made our day.

Let’s not forget our brick and mortar businesses—they opened up the doors and moved all the bargains out into the street. Christiansen’s Jewelry was practically giving away silver. Cornerstone Cottage had their ‘we hate it you take it’ sale. The Wood Cellar and Orange Possum opened up their upstairs (23 steps) and shared their bargains with all of us.

Next year you won’t want to miss Junk It In June. Friendships are enjoyed, bargains are had and Hampton comes alive!

Enjoy the video.

Father's Day Breakfast

The students at the Christian Day Care Center got to eat breakfast with their dads on Friday morning! It was a great success and most of the kids enjoyed chocolate chip pancakes. Eggs, sausage, applesauce and milk went down real well too.

There are still spots open in for their summer program. Call Angie at 641-456-4922 for more info. The kids get to do things like visit a rock quarry, see animals from the Conservation office, flyswatter painting, shaving cream art—and lots more!
